(March 30, 2022)/ENDURANCE SPORTS WIRE/ – With the IRONMAN 2022 season kicking off in North America at Athletic Brewing IRONMAN® 70.3® Oceanside Triathlon on Saturday April 2, the IRONMAN® The Foundation will distribute over $30,000 in charitable donations to non-profit initiatives and groups in the greater Oceanside area. This year’s grant brings total donations to more than $425,000 in the region since its inception. At Saturday’s event, a Gold Star family will also be honored through the Gold Star Initiative program. Capping off the weekend of the event, the IRONMAN Foundation will host its fourth annual Junior Seau Foundation Youth Adaptive Surf Clinic presented by the Challenge Athletes Foundation.® on Sunday, April 3, 2022.
Gold Star Initiative
Athletic Brewing’s IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside 2022 will once again feature the Gold Star initiative. Through the Gold Star initiative, IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 athletes who have served in the United States military carry the American flag during the race portion of the event and present it to a Gold Star family. This program allows athletes to play a role in the healing process of families who have lost loved ones in the name of freedom.
Navy Lieutenant Commander Jondi Bernardo will serve as the Gold Star Initiative Athlete at Athletic Brewing IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside and run in honor of Army Staff Sergeant Bryan Burgess. Lieutenant Commander Bernardo served in the United States Navy from 1987 to 1992 and in the United States Navy Reserves from 1992 to 2010 as a Navy Surface Warfare Officer. Bernardo is a four-time IRONMAN finisher, nine-time IRONMAN 70.3, three-time ultramarathon and four-time Marine Corps. Marathon finisher. He is the founder of Oceanside Multisport Group, an active multisport club for athletes of all levels. Lt. Commander Bernardo will carry the American flag during the race portion of the triathlon in honor of Army Master Sgt. Bryan Burgess, who died in 2011 aged 29 after enemy forces attacked his unit in Afghanistan. The Texas native had been in the military for nine years. His wife and two children will receive the flag at the end of Lieutenant Commander Bernardo’s race.
The IRONMAN Foundation to Host Its Fourth Junior Seau Foundation Youth Adaptive Surf Clinic Presented by the Challenged Athletes Foundation® Sunday, April 3, 2022, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the South Oceanside Pier. The event will include specialized sessions for youth, women, and military/adults with physical challenges.

The clinic will host sessions that will total up to 30 physically challenged children, women, and military/adults who will spend the morning learning to paddle and surf at Oceanside Pier with the help of volunteers, including triathletes and coaches. professionals and age group. .
