DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. – More than 40 cyclists competed in the Delaware 2021 Special Olympics Cycling Classic at Dover Air Force Base, Del., Oct. 2, 2021.
After the 2020 event was canceled due to the COVID pandemic, cyclists representing five teams from Delaware and one from Virginia returned to Dover AFB to compete in 500-meter, 1K, 2K, 5K bike races and tricycle and a 10K bike race during the event.
Over 90 volunteers helped set up race routes, record individual competitors’ times and help out when needed.
“It has been a huge deal for us to return to Dover AFB and we are extremely fortunate to be working with all of you,” said Kylie Frazer, Director of Sports and Competition for Special Olympics Delaware. “We really appreciate the support. “
AJ Sonato, representing the Kent Wild Kats team, then led the athletes to recite the Special Olympics Oath. After the oath, Chief Master Sgt. Timothy Bayes, 436th AW Command Chief, presented the Special Olympics Torch to Justin Daisey, Sussex Riptide as Col. Matt Husemann, 436th Airlift Wing Commander, officially opened the games.
“To the athletes, we are so proud of you,” said Husemann. “To all of the Delaware AFB Dover Special Olympics AFB volunteers, coaches, family, friends and honor guard… thank you for everything you do, not just for us as the base, but for the community.
At the end of each race, the athletes were awarded medals in their respective races and divisions by the management of the Dover team.
Colonel Douglas Stouffer, commander of the 512th Airlift Wing, gave the closing speech as the event came to a successful conclusion.
“I am very grateful to all of you who are here today, especially to the families, friends, coaches and all of the volunteers who were here to help put this in place,” said Stouffer. “I want to thank the athletes. You have shown dedication, practice and training, I am so proud of you. You did a great job and I want you to hear this from the bottom of my heart you should all be proud of yourself.
