Chamber Chat: Double Your Local Purchases | News, Sports, Jobs

Throughout the current pandemic and economic uncertainties, the GINCC and other local economic organizations are promoting Buy Local initiatives to support our businesses in these turbulent times.

The saying goes, “You don’t know what you’ve lost until he’s gone.” There have been many times where many local owners have worried about their businesses closing in the past couple of years.

Luckily, the majority of them have been successful, but we have to keep in mind that smaller businesses survive on lower margins than large retail chains and struggle to compete with prices online.

As we continue to go through a difficult time, please continue to support small retailers and stores. As a community, we should always buy local first when possible and support businesses that in turn support our communities.

Throughout the summer, the GINCC will be promoting local events and happenings focused on supporting businesses. Each time an event is successful and attracts visitors to the area, it presents an opportunity to contribute to the local economy.

The GINCC also supports and promotes several buy local initiatives to help our communities thrive. One being the Love on Local initiative, a collaborative program organized by the Lake Superior Community Partnership. Using a merchant card, the program operates using a debit card and marketing system to promote local spending in Marquette County.

Love on Local cards can be purchased with as little as $10 and up to $500 loaded onto them. The campaign offers customers the opportunity to support local businesses throughout the year and enter a monthly draw for a $50 Love on Local card. If we’ve learned anything over the past two years, it’s that we’re stronger together and by supporting each other we can make a difference. So as we look forward to a busy summer, remember to think local first.
